This video from Fr. James Martin explains that although we don’t hear much about St. Joseph in the Gospel, he was an important figure in Jesus’s hidden life, before he began his public ministry.
Joseph passed on his values as a carpenter – patience, honesty, hard work. He would have also taught Jesus about his Jewish religious tradition. Joseph probably also passed on his ideas of compassion and forgiveness. Joseph and Mary were refugees, so we can see him as a holy role model in difficult situations.
Joseph teaches us that even the small things we do which seem hidden from the world can have an impact.
